San Francisco Chef Michael Mina

Although he was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1969, San Francisco Chef Michael Mina spent his childhood in Ellensburg, Washington. He got his start in the restaurant industry when he began working at a local French restaurant when he turned 16. He attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York shortly after graduating high school. Michael Mina first became an executive chef at Aqua. His restaurant management group, the Mina Group, owns close to 20 restaurants in the United States and Mexico. Many of these restaurants are located in casinos, resort hotels and high-rise residential buildings like the Millennium Tower.

Awards and Accolades

Over a span of eight years dating from 1997 to 2005, he was named "Chef of the Year" by Bon Appétit, San Francisco Magazine and the James Beard Foundation, and he was also named "Restaurateur of the Year" in 2005. Michael Mina's self-named restaurants in San Francisco and in Las Vegas have also been named "Top 40" restaurants from 2004 to 2009. Esquire Magazine named the Bay Area Michael Mina location the "Restaurant of the Year" in October of 2011, and although Michelin ratings have been temporarily suspended in Las Vegas, Michael Mina's namesake restaurant in the Bellagio casino did earn one Michelin star as recently as 2009.

RN74 in San Francisco

One of his newest restaurants, RN74 at Millennium Tower in San Francisco, opened in 2009 and is located on the ground floor of the luxury high rise building. The restaurant is just as famous for its wine selection as it is for its cuisine. The restaurant styles itself as an urban wine bar, with a wide selection of the world's top wines, including several wines from the Burgundy region of France. The restaurant has a train schedule board that flips to show patrons the most recent bottle of wine that was served. Other Mina Group restaurants look to create modern and unique interpretations of regional cuisine, and the food at RN74 is no exception. All of the dishes are created with locally sourced ingredients and are inspired by the French Burgundy area. There are many fine cheeses to go along with or take the place of dessert, and there are several signature cocktails to enjoy.
