The Mac OS X from Apple offers a lot of attractive features to Mac users including a hidden menu that lets users enjoy some additional features. These hidden features are not frequently used but they can become useful at times. For example, if there is a debug menu in the Disk Utility then it is going to help you in viewing hidden partitions that will enable you to manage volumes and disks.

Apart from the Disk Utility, the Contacts program also has debug menu that can manage the address book database of the user by offering a couple of useful features. If you want to debug the menu using this feature, you need to simply open the Terminal utility by going into the Applications and then the Utilities folder.

Once you open and run the Terminal Utility, the Contact program gets launched, in which you see a new debug menu. The options available in this menu are used to write debugging and programming information on the OS X device or help in the development of the program.

Below discussed are the four main features of the options available in the contacts debugging menu in the OS X console:

Enter Time Machine

Although it has become redundant due to  the additional Time Machine menu in the OS X, it offers a hot key (Control-Command-B) that helps in loading the backups of the Time Machine quickly. This feature is very useful for you if you require accessing deleted data related to your Contacts, regularly.

Browse Archive

Browse Archive is probably a more useful option which you can take to load Contacts to a previously exported Address Book archive. Use this option for exporting an archive through the File menu. Once you click on the option it will save everything in a single archive file. When you open the archive file it will replace your current Contacts database.

But when you open the Browse Archive option then you can open the archive without replacing the current Contact database. So when you are using this option then you can conveniently browse the contacts, export them as a card or simply copy and paste them into your main Address Book archive. So this is a useful option provided with the Mac OS X.

Refresh Accounts

This is another useful option provided within the Contacts debug menu in the Mac OS X. It is useful for managing networked Address Book accounts including Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) services and online services such as Google and Yahoo. In case online changes have not been updated in your Contacts list then you can use this option to manually refresh and update the Address Book changes.

Show People Picker Panel

Another option in the OS X Contacts debug menu is the 'Show People Picker Panel,' which is a standard contacts picker. It is very similar to the contacts panel provided within the Apple's Mail Program. It helps you enjoy a more refined view of your contacts and provides options for dragging and dropping. Using this option, you can also enter contact data into the fields of various programs.
