BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - A Birmingham man today was sentenced to three years probation for mail fraud related to false claims submitted about income he lost as a bartender on the Gulf Coast after the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Jonathan M. Hoffman was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Abdul Kallon in a hearing at the Hugo L. Black U.S. Courthouse in Birmingham, according to court records. Hoffman also will have to pay restitution of $46,150, the judge said.
Prosecutors dismissed another mail fraud charge as part of a plea agreement with Hoffman.
Hoffman had been indicted in December related to claims he made to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility for lost wages from a coastal restaurant where he had worked as a bartender. According to his plea agreement, Hoffman was overpaid $46,150.
