Hawaiians are known for their beautiful feather work seen in traditional leis, capes, and helmets as far back as John Webber engravings of the voyages of Captain James Cook, c.1780’s.
This spectacular feather lei hulu is wili or tied individually to a central cord in the style of traditional Hawaiian lei making.
It is hand-stitched by Boris Kekaiuluikahikina Huang, one of Hawaii’s premiere feather lei makers who apprenticed with renowned Hawaii lei master Auntie Mary Lou Kekuewa.
Boris painstakingly handcrafts Hawaiian feather leis at his studio in Honolulu, Hawaii. He creates his own lei hulu patterns using feathers from different birds (such as goose, pheasant, duck, peacock, etc.). He creates feather leis of many different styles ranging from traditional poepoe and kamoe to contemporary designs.
Boris has been commissioned to craft lei hulu for special organizations, including the Honolulu Symphony, Hawaii Education Association, Manoa Valley Theatre, Goodwill Industries of Hawaii Inc., Hawaii Tourism Authority, Waikiki Outrigger Hotel and many others.
Boris has exhibited his lei hulu at Hawaii Pacific University Ohana Gallery Exhibition 2007, 2008 & 2009, the Moanalua Gardens Prince Lot Hula Festival, and Queen Emma Summer Palace.
