Those who suffer from depression or other psychological problems seem to have high levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) more than normal, according to the findings of experts from Denmark.
CRP has previously been associated with an increased risk of heart disease. CRP is a plasma protein produced by the liver in response to infection, injury, and inflammatory processes. High levels of CRP indicates inflammation in the body. Because heart disease is the result of inflammation in the arterial wall, CRP can be used as a general marker of heart disease risk (not cholesterol).
People with high CRP levels have two to three times more risk of depression, according to a researcher. Thus they tend to consume more drugs in the beta blocker class. However, high levels of CRP are not meant to indicate the cause of depression. Similarly, the lower levels of CRP may not be able to reduce depression. It is explained that high levels of CRP in the blood is associated with unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, and chronic diseases. So at the time of the study, his team also take took these factors into account.
The study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry consisted of data from more than 73,000 adults living in the city of Copenhagen. These people reported taking antidepressant medications, almost the same as beta blockers, and were even treated for depression.
The researchers found that those who took antidepressants had CRP levels three times higher than those who did not. In addition, elevated levels of CRP were associated also with the greater possibility of being treated for depression.
However, not all experts agree with the analysis, since the effect of CRP in depression remains unclear. In other words, the results of this study cannot explain the link between CRP and depression. A chief of psychiatry in New York agreed with the results of this study, even though he was not sure whether there is a strong correlation between depression and CRP leves.

Tomato is found to be able to reduce depression. A new study in Japan revealed that by eating tomatoes for only two days a week, you can reduce the risk of depression by 50 percent.
The researchers analyzed mental health and eating habits of 986 people, and 70 people in the study regularly ate tomatoes. The participants who ate tomato were significantly less likely to suffer from depression.
The study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, found that those who ate tomatoes two to six times a week were 46 percent less likely to experience depression than those who ate them less than once a week.Furthermore, the researchers found that participants who consumed tomato products every day reduced their risk of depression by 52 percent.
What about fruits and vegetables?
Apparently the researchers conclude that fruits and vegetables do not have the same benefits as tomatoes. Vegetables such as cabbages, carrots, onions, and green vegetables seemed to have little or no effect at all on the participants' mental health.
The researchers noted that as many as 34.9 percent of participants had symptoms of either mild or severe depression, even 20.2 percent of participants had major depression at some point in their lives. According to the researchers, age factor affects a person suffering from depression. The elderly are more likely to suffer from depression as a result of the effects of their declining health and loneliness.
