What Can You Do with a Radiology Degree in Chicago?

With the shaky state of the economy today, everyone is doing their best to find careers that offer job stability. One of the fields with the most job stability is healthcare. Healthcare is going to provide jobs for people as long as people get sick. One of the hottest areas of the healthcare field is radiology. Keep reading to see all the career paths a degree from Chicago radiology schools has to offer.

Radiologic Technology

Students that get Chicago radiology degrees will most likely make this their specialty. This is the widest area of radiology. It is the general branch of radiology. Students who focus on radiologic technology will most like be administering X-rays, but this also covers those that specialize in doing mammograms. Most students that focus on this area will find work in hospitals. However, there are also spots available for graduates in clinics, dental offices and imaging centers.

This is definitely one of the most rewarding specialties for radiology students. Sonography is the use of high-frequency sound waves to make images of the body’s interior. Most sonographers get to take ultrasounds of expectant mothers, but sonography can also be used to image the heart, brain, blood vessels and eyes.

Computerized Tomography

More commonly known by its initials, as in CT scan, computerized tomography makes detailed scans of the body using X-rays. This is one of the most exciting areas of radiology, and students who want to succeed in this area will need to work very hard. These expensive CT machines are generally only found in hospitals, so that is where the jobs are.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Usually abbreviated MRI, magnetic resonance imaging is one of the few imaging techniques that does not require radiation to perform. Since it does not use X-rays, a MRI is much less likely to inflict damage on a patient’s body. These machines are very large and expensive, so job seekers will almost surely be looking for work in a hospital setting.

Nuclear Medicine

This branch of radiology uses the introduction of radioactive materials into the body to generate images of certain parts of the body. Nuclear medicine is a branch of radiology that requires great precision and a skilled hand. This is one of the most stressful kinds of procedures for patients, so students who go into nuclear medicine need to be good with people.

A Sure Future

All these radiological career paths will be in high demand as the population of Chicago continues to age. Potential students of Chicago radiology schools should pick the branch of radiologic technology that most appeals to them, work hard and prepare to have a rewarding and secure career.
