Tourism is a major industry in India and the Ministry of Tourism launched a campaign to promote Incredible India as a tourist destination in 2002. The phrase "Incredible India" was adopted as a slogan by the ministry. Before 2002, the Indian government regularly formulated policies and prepared pamphlets and brochures for the promotion of tourism, however, it did not support tourism in a concerted fashion.

India’s geographical consists of forests, deserts, and mountains and beaches. There is a huge diversity of culture i.e. a blend of various civilizations and their traditions.
Lacks adequate infrastructure. Narrow minded attitude of certain sections of the people. No proper marketing of India’s tourism abroad. Foreigners still think of India as a land of snake charmers.

Economic conditions and political turmoil in other countries affects tourism. Aggressive strategies adopted by other countries like Australia; Singapore in promoting their tourism affects Indian tourism.
India has been able to achieve significantly higher growth than the world average in international arrivals in the last few years. This can be further increased by:
- Development of tourism infrastructure
- Strategic marketing and publicity measures under the established ‘Incredible India’s promotional brand.
- Development of human resources
- Development of niche tourism products like medical & wellness tourism, adventure, rural and MICE tourism a natural choice.
- Market research to facilitate policies and programmers.
- Effective monitoring of tourism projects
