Kite flying is a very popular pastime with boys, especially in Lahore and Amritsar. In Lahore, even elderly people indulge in it, and very keen competitions are held, and sometimes serious accidents happen. Kites are of various forms and sizes, and are made up of thin paper and bamboo sticks. Thread is passed through two points, each at a little distance from the ends, and then it is tied into a sort of a loophole, to which glazed thread is tied in a fast knot. This thread, the kite flier holds in his hands, and the kite is floated into the air. When the wind blows, the kite flies, and the thread is loosened. It rises higher and higher till it becomes steady.it is a sight to see a steady kite high up in the air.

When the threads of two rival kites cross each other, and get entangled, an interesting situation arises. Each side tries to cut the other’s thread, and when one thread rubs against the other, a strange sensation is produced as the vibrations reach the fingers. When one kite is cut off, the other comes out victorious, and flies proudly high. The cut-away kite is followed by eager crowds of men who try to catch the prize, and many scuffles take place over it. Kite flying is a very popular sport in India. It is also known as Makarsankranti or Uttarayan. Kite flying is very entertaining game which is usually very enjoyed in China and Japan. People in Dubai also celebrate kite season and festivals are arranged in the malls, even attractions are decorated with kites like Dhow Cruise Dubai or if you find any Pakistani restaurant in Dubai. This is mostly played in Pakistan and India, in some other parts of world people don’t know about it.

It is a favorite festival of Lohorities.  Some of the people act as rivals and spend thousands of rupees on Basant day. The roof tops in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Islamabad are crowded. People cry aloud “bo-kata” throughout the day. People enjoy a lot but at the same time many mishaps occur. Precious lives are lost or limbs broken. Metal strings cause electrocutions and power-failures.  A total wastage but who cares? Now-a-days, basant has now become a bloody failure.According to Islam, it is a culture which a Muslim should not celebrate, but it is widely been celebrated by the Muslims majority population in Lahore. In 90’s, basant celebration was being widely celebrated but  then suddenly it  came under ban due to an increasing number of deaths which was caused by highly tensile glass coated threads. If you are living in Dubai, and if you are a Muslim then probably you miss your home land at such occasions. But Dubai is a Muslim state, so they also take care about people sentiments.
