Due to the presence of nitrates in the pond and correspondingly due to the toxin effects, most of the pond keepers focus on the eradication of nitrites from the pond. Nitrites in whole cannot be blamed because these grow due to ammonia which easily develops in the pond resulting as detrimental element. On contrary many pond owners over look the facts that nitrate residues from ammonia or the nitrite purging process. Many think that nitrites are not harmful to the fish and other aquatic lives in the pond. However, recently it has been found that there are some new fish diseases that didn’t exist earlier but now do due to nitrites.
One of the reasons that why nitrates are termed to be good compounds is that the pond weed feed on them. No one could ignore the fact that some unwanted plants like creatures are also viewed in the pond. Such wild plants grow in the pond and indicate that there is excessive amount of nitrate, sunlight and heat. The worst and nastiest part of having a pond full of such wild plants is that they lose the efficiency of reacting on the ultra violet filters, which in turn is much bigger problem for the pond owners. Thus, the only way to keep these weeds away is to reduce the nitrates in pond.
There are effective weed controlling treatments which you need to follow. In order to keep the pond free from ammonia and wild plants and weed, the pond keeper take help of the de-nitrification process. Firstly the presence of ammonia is seen in the pond and later it turns into nitrite which leads to excess of weeds in the ponds and makes the water contaminated for the aquatic organisms. Thus, the reverse process known as de-nitrification needs to be followed. This process is simple and could be carried out with the help of few bacteria that could readily help in de-flourishing the nitrites and making the pond less harmful.
The process is simple and just the opposite of nitrification. The entire process includes two steps, firstly, converting back the finished products of nitrobacteria to nitrites and secondly these nitrites are converted back into three forms namely nitric oxide, nitrous oxide and nitrogen gas.
If the size of the pond is small, it is practical to carry out the process but if the pond is big, it would not be practical to execute the process due to the denitrifying filter. Thus, in such cases it is imperative to have a steady organic source material which is able to filter and stock up the solid mud material.
Instead of just counting on the de-nitrification process, which would have been miraculous if performed, there are many other alternatives also that could help you to get rid of pond weed. One method is periodically change the water of the pond, at least once a year and avoid the algae and other wild plants and weeds from breeding.
If your pond is flooded with wild plants and weeds, don’t lose hope. All you just have to do is take help of any of the weed removing or controlling method and maintain it properly for future.
