Liposuction is a surgical procedure for removing areas of stubborn fat that do not respond to diet and regular exercise. Liposuction can remove fat from the back, chest, stomach, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, underneath the chin and the neck with the aim of reshaping and slimming that particular area. However, liposuction is not a quick-fix weight loss treatment, it is designed to contour and improve the shape of the body and is best suited for people who have a healthy weight but have stubborn areas of fat. The ideal candidate for a liposuction procedure is someone of average weight with firm, elastic skin who has pockets of fat in specific areas that they would like removed.
Traditional surgical liposuction is done under a general anesthetic. During a liposuction procedure, small 5mm incisions will be made around the treatment area, and a hollow suction tube (also known as a cannula) is inserted and moved around under the skin to break up the unwanted fat. The fat is removed either manually with a large syringe, or with the use of a vacuum pump. The overlying skin remains attached to the connective tissue and underlying muscles of the skin during the operation and a thin blanket of fat is left under the skin to help prevent dimpling or bumpy skin after the liposuction procedure. After the liposuction procedure, one can expect the treatment area to be sore, with some bruising and swelling. Depending on the extent of treatment, one should allow for 5-7 days of recovery time. As the liposuction procedure has improved and developed, several variations on the original technique have been introduced. These include tumescent liposuction where fluid is injected into the fatty areas and ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty which uses ultrasonic rays of energy to break down the fat. Liposuction patients in St.Louis area are able to discuss all the possible procedure options with their cosmetic surgeons before agreeing upon the appropriate one.
Laser vein removal is a proven, effective treatment for unsightly red or purple veins on the face or for broken or unwanted vascular lesions. Prominent veins on the surface of the skin can be caused by smoking, alcohol consumption, hormone changes or temperature changes. For some, “they simply run in the family”. These veins are very hard and almost impossible to get rid of naturally. Laser vein treatment provides a very successful option in terms of reducing and removing these veins. Laser vein treatment is performed by passing a specialized light through the patient’s skin. The laser light is absorbed by unwanted veins, causing them to coagulate, absorb, and disappear. At Laser Vein Treatment centers in St.Louis, a local anesthetic is administered before laser vein removal to limit discomfort, and the entire treatment generally takes less than an hour.
