The Indian recipes have a rich history dating from 4000 years ago. It can be traced from 200BC and earlier with the most significant development being in 1000BC after the introduction of the Caste system. During this era eating habits were subdivided along the various castes with an example of the Brahmins who were vegetarians for the most part while the khatriyas were non-vegetarian. Then religion continued to shape the different recipes notably during 600BC where there was the emergence of the Buddhism and Jainism. The Indian recipes continued to evolve up to the colonial period and into the post independence period after 1947 giving us the various delicacies.

Each and every state in India has its own way of preparing the Indian recipes. The recipes include vegetarian recipes, non vegetarian recipes, Gujarati recipes south Indian recipes, Punjabi recipes among others. The non vegetarian dishes include tandoori tikkas, roshan goshts, kababa, butter chicken, biryani among others. In the Indian Cuisine foods have been divided into six tastes which are; salty, sour, spicy, sweet, astringent, and taste of bitterness. These tastes come about by the use of spices. The spices are not only used for their good flavor but also for their potent medicinal values. This has been a major attraction towards the Indian recipes because of their healing nature.

Today India is the leading Nation in exporting of spices. Vast varieties of the spices grow naturally in different parts of India. This explains why almost all Indian recipes contain spices in the list of ingredients. The spices always cast a spell on our imaginations by flattering our senses. Their smell gives enticing fragrances, and their tastes give a unique flavor.

To aid in the cooking the North and West india have adopted ground nut oil which has been popular traditionally. The Eastern India commonly uses the mustard oil. In the recent times sunflower oil and soya been oil are gaining popularity all over the country. North Indian recipes are characterized by high use of daily products like milk, butter and Paneer. Eastern India recipes comprise of desserts such as chum chum, Sandesh, rasabali, chhene gaja and chhena gaja. For south India, the recipes are based on the staple food rice. The western India has three food groups; Maharashtrian, Gujarati and Goan consisting of coconut, rice and fish.

Indian dishes have gained popularity in the entire world. This has generally been possible because it is has become easy to find all things related to the recipes in the appropriate manner. They are particularly common world over during Indian marriages. Any marriage may be seen to be incomplete without the Indian food recipes.

The following is an Indian Recipe for a vegetarian dish that takes thirty minutes to prepare and serve.


1tablespoon whole cumin
1tablespoon coriander powder
2 onions sliced
4 dried red chillies
2tablespoons garlic-ginger paste
1/2tablespoon chilli powder
1tablespoon turmeric
Salt to taste
2tablespoon chopped cilantro
2 fresh green chillies (optional)


Heat the oil in a pan. Add the dried red chillies, cumin and stir to mix.
Add the onions and stir until they turn golden brown.
Add the turmeric, garlic-ginger paste, chilli powder, salt and finely chopped green chillies, stir fry for 2 minutes.
Add chopped potatoes and cut small florets cauliflower to the mixture, stir to coat the vegetables in the spice mixture.
Add water and reduce the heat. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes.
Transfer the vegetables to warmed serving plates and serve while hot.

The Indian food recipes provide provides clear guidelines to the food of India which is extremely inspiring. The different foods have different tastes that are derived from the seasonings, spices and leafy vegetables. The diversity of the recipes makes them extra ordinary basing on the religious believes, culture, climate and the availability of the ingredients.
