Tiberius, full name Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar (42 BC - AD 37), Roman Emperor, AD 14 - 37, son of Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia, afterwards wife of Augustus. Tiberius was born 42 BC; He was a cautious ruler whose reign was marred by the heavy incident of trials for treason or conspiracy.
Tiberius, the stepson of Augustus, was the second Roman emperor and the first in the Julio-Claudian line. Tiberius's early years as emperor were marked by wise policies of reform in the treasury and the navy, and restraint in other spheres, notably the public games, made Tiberius unpopular in Rome.
But his naturally taciturn nature, probably embittered by his years in exile, led him to become increasingly solitary and he eventually retired to Capri in AD 27, never to return to Rome.
Later Roman historians, such as Suetonius, depicted him as a debauched tyrant, but some modern scholars have suggested that this view may be exaggerated. He died in Campania, Italy, 37 AD. He was succeed by his great-nephew Caligula.
