Persona 4 Arena Game Review
Combat games today are usually in the form of a one on one or a tag team battle format. Persona 4 Arena mixes these two styles in allowing you to control two characters side by side, one being your character and the other being their persona (a character specific creature). The games schema is easy to learn so still with the basic level of Arc System complexity the game is still very playable with very minor problems.
As with the case of any combat game, the actual fight mechanics are the key thing. The games learning curve is pretty much the same as other Arc games such as Guilty Gear and blazeblue. Round by round pair of fighters face off using their physical powers as well as the abilities of their individual personas.
The main feature of this game is the personas, which are the character unique beings that assist your character in combat. First seen these personas seem similar to the stands from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Albeit the similarities there are still differences.
Unlike JoJo's Bizarre Adventure where the stands could be toggled on or off, the personas are always present by their fighters’ side. Usually the personas attack relative to situation such as an in air counter or a projectile attack. Whereas the characters handle the fight combos aided by the persona. Some avatars like Yukiko and Elizabeth rely more than others on their personas to do the fighting. The discovery of the perfect fighter-persona combat mix is the ultimate challenge specific to which foe you are fighting. The flash and awe of the persona do add a certain style to the whole fight experience.
- Use fighter and persona in unison
Similar to the earlier Jojo game, these personas also become “broken” if they take too much damage in a fight. Their health is denoted by four cards under your health bar which deplete each time your persona receives a hit. If they end so does your persona rendering it unusable for a cool down period after which they rejoin the fight.
Most of the fighters in the roster have a unique combat style. As an example, Labrys' has a gigantic axe that becomes more deadly as the fight progresses and a character called Aigis has depleting ammo count for some of her moves. The use of these specific traits makes each fighters style feel very distinct.
For most of the other fighting mechanics there is just one single energy gauge. One of the most important techniques is One More Cancel which allows you to extend combos and make emergency blocks. Although it depletes your energy gauge it adds a new dimension to the gameplay mechanics.
- The game is fast paced
Due to the auto combo system, persona 4 is very easy for the newbies in the game series. Just like in Street fighter X Tekken, boost combos are present which are a series of simple combo attacks which lead to a special move and then an ultimate move (provided you have enough energy) with a very simple key combo. Although simple, this is hardly the most deadly move set in any of the characters abilities, older players may find them in their own custom built combo sets.
The story line of the game revolves around a group of young high school students who see a late night broadcast and are sucked into a TV set where they fight with one another for the amusement of a bear in a cape. Sounds weird? Most of us think so but thankfully the games cut scenes do much in familiarizing you with the Persona storyline up till now.
All of the 13 characters in the game have their own rich story to put forth. Centered on the fighting tournament of P1 grand prix which is a fighting tournament exist inside the TV world. For the players who like to immerse into the world of the game they can follow each characters branching storylines with the alternate endings. As a down point the actual cut scenes are a letdown as they comprise only of two portraits of characters in a monologist text based conversation. This does tend to bore out the player.
A leaner single campaign experience is found in the persona 4 arcade mode. In this mode the gargantuan monologues are condensed to snippets at the start and end of each fight. The arcade mode reveals most of the key plot points in under an hour.
For help on a hard battle the game has an education mode. Firstly is Lesson mode which covers the basics. The trails herein cover everything from character movement to special moves.
- There are demonstrations to assist timing
The challenge mode becomes more aiding in the intermediate difficulty. Along with introducing basic moves, this mode will teach you each and every combo for every character in the roster. One good thing about it is that it gives the player a heads up on each player’s simplest most effective combos. Once familiarized with the control scheme you can move on to tougher challenges including the “inflict more than 9000 damage) challenge in the end.
Online, the game offers the basic fundamentals any fighting game offers with some new twists. The normal ranking and high score filtering and logging is present. Match options include winner or loser to stay and a cap for how many in-a-row wins are allowed.
The performance online is quite nice as matches in the same region were with little or no lag and even international matches run smoothly once loaded.
- Roughly half the dialogue is fully spoken
The fast paced action of Persona4 can be relished without prior need of being a fan already. For the auto combo systems ease, it is found that the higher combos and specific character routines still offer a discovery challenge. Even for the Persona lore fan this game holds much intrigue with the sheer length and detail of its storyline despite the poor presentation. All in all Persona4 has its own class and is a wonderful addition to the Arc System’s line up.
