Developers at Honda have engineered their own "Collision Mitigation Brake System." When your speed is above 10 mph, using a radar sensor the car will monitor the proximity of vehicles ahead. If the driver becomes too close, appropriate braking will be applied and seatbelts are automatically tightened. This is just one of the many realisations of sensor technology. Elsewhere pedestrian and blind-spot monitoring systems, as well as lane departure warning systems, are all in the process of being developed.
The potential of sensor technology is that the vehicle itself can be the eyes and the ears on the road, removing the capacity of human error in a bid to create an accident free environment on the road.

The XL1 weighs 1800 pounds and is made of carbon fibre, which weighs half as much as steel. Though it's maximum speed is just shy of 100 mph, the XL1 exemplifies the potential of the automotive industry to help carve a world that is better to the environment of which its part.
