Using a surgical mask is an effective method that an individual can use to prevent the spread of airborne infections. A surgical mask is composed of three layers that include; an inner layer that absorbs moisture, a middle layer which is a cotton filter, and an outside layer that is water resistant. However, it is important for one to use these masks properly to ensure they are effective in controlling infection.
To achieve the full efficacy of surgical masks they should always be worn over the mouth and nose to prevent the spread of germs. One should never lift or remove it from your face at any time while working in a risk-prone environment and if for any reason the inside of the mask is exposed to the outside air, becomes wet or dirty, the mask should be replaced immediately. Be advised that a surgical mask is intended for single use only.
