There is quite a bit of difference between a generation 5 Proliant
DL320 and a generation 6. Both of these models are able to function in a
network quite efficiently. Different generations of servers will have
major differences while sharing the same model number. The differences
between the HP Proliant DL320 G5 and the G6 are quite noticeable.

CPU and Memory are Enhanced

While the G5 version of the DL320 utilizes the Xeon 3000 series of
dual-core processors, the G6 makes use of the Xeon 5500 and 5600 family
of CPUs. These Xeons give the G6 two, four, or six cores per CPU to
power through any task. While both of these servers use PC2-5300 ECC
memory, the HP Proliant DL320 G6puts
96GB to use. The G5 has a maximum capacity of 8GB. For a file server,
or simple networking infrastructures, 8GB of memory could be plenty, but
96GB gives the server far more power to wield.

Increased Storage Capacities for Heavier Workloads

When comparing the DL320 G5 and the G6 for storage, you can see that the
G6 has more than double the capabilities. In the G5, the maximum
supported capacity is two 750GB SATA drives giving a total of 1.5TB. The
HP Proliant DL320 G6 has capabilities to handle four
LFF or eight SFF SATA hard drives. The SAS drive capacity limit is only
two drives totaling 600GB in the G5. The DL320 G6 can handle four LFF or
eight SFF SAS drives providing far more storage space.

Low Powered but Not Incapable

For a network that needs a simple server, the HP Proliant DL320 G6
has a good price for the capabilities. The dual Gigabit Ethernet ports
make this unit able to adapt to most networking needs. In a small
business network, the DL320 G5 could be at the right price for the needs
of the facility. The dual-core processors, 8GB of memory, and 1.5TB of
drive space is more than enough power for a file server and light

Heavier Workloads Could Demand More

The HP Proliant DL320 G6 is ideal for a network that
has more on its "to-do" list. With more than double the drive space,
more than 10 times the memory, and more powerful CPUs this unit can
power through where the G5 could fail. If you are in need of help
