Review of Chef Michael Mina's RN74 in San Francisco

Upon stepping into RN74 at the base of the Millennium Tower in San Francisco's SoMa district, we discovered its cool ambiance. It is dark and inviting, a place that welcomes you in and envelopes you into the experience of drinking and eating there. RN74 is a place where your experiences resonate in your mind long after you depart the premises.

This restaurant is named for route national 74 in France, the Route des Grands Crus that traverses Burgundy from Dijon to Beaune, an area that is the home of Burgundy wine. RN74 follows that theme to precision with an incredible wine list, highlighted by selections from Burgundy.

The travel theme is perfected here with a train-station décor, as RN74 was at one time a train route. In fact, the restaurant has a wine board set up just like a train station would list train arrivals and departures. The wines listed on the board were those that were down to their final bottle.

The wine and drink list contained a tremendous amount of variety. The server was also very informed and communicative about the details of every wine we mentioned. It can be challenging to come to a decision, but everybody in our group was very pleased with their selections.

The syrah was exquisite. The salmon tartar was a light dish that wetted my taste buds. The grilled prime beef was cooked to perfection. It came out very tender and tasty. The warm beignets wrapped up the meal. Served with nutmeg and caramel, it was a perfect way to end an evening.

As a member of our group is vegan, it was nice and appreciated that a simple mention of that fact when we made our reservation resulted in him being very satisfied with his meal. In fact, they were very willing to work with any member of our group on any dietary restriction.

Overall, it was a memorable evening. San Francisco chef Michael Mina has done it again, and done it with staying power. From entering RN74 at Millennium Tower located just a block south of Market Street to the time when we headed back out into San Francisco’s crisp air, the night was one to remember. I would definitely recommend RN74 to others.
