They’re the kind of sneakers you’ll never run laps in, or really do any running in at all. But as a fun fashion statement, wedge sneakers are popping up everywhere, in suede, leather, bright colours and metallic. The look is inspired by street fashion, and became popular first among models, then among celebrities like Beyonce and Anne Hathaway, says Crissi Giamos, director of public relations for Town Shoes and the Shoe Company. At first, wedge sneakers found favour mostly among young women, but they’re now striking a chord with women of all ages, she says. “The thing with these is there’s a three-inch hidden wedge (heel) and any time anyone — it doesn’t matter how old you are — can fake height like that, you love it. “You’re wearing running shoes, but you look sexier or taller or sleeker because you’ve got the height. You don’t want to wear a stiletto with your sweatpants, but you throw these on and it’s cool. ”Wedge sneakers come in all kinds Isabel Marant Sneakers of materials, with add-ons like neon trims, flashy laces and studs, she says. So instead of doing a little studded black bootie, do a studded, high, wedge sneaker. ”At the Steve Madden store in WEM, sales associate Tara Buchta say the shoe is popular among twenty-somethings in particular. The store carries styles in multiple colours, including www.isabelmarant.tm.fr black, grey, brown and bright blue. Sterling Shoes also carries several styles, from Steve Madden, NYLA and Report, says a staffer at the Kingsway store. They’re a popular choice with skinny jeans or coloured jeggings, especially among high school and college-aged women. “It’s the trend this season. A lot of people are buying them, ” says Paulina Lu, a staffer at Giuseppe Zanotti Brown’s in Southgate Centre. The store has been carrying ones from Mimosa with a small wedge heel since the fall, and Lu expects to see more this spring. “You can wear it casual or even a little bit dressier, with a skirt. ”Giamos says the high-heeled wedge is certainly more stable and comfortable than a stiletto, but make no mistake, it is athletic in inspiration only. “This is strictly a fashion piece. You’re not running on the track in these Isabel Marant Sneakers. ”
