Headaches have many causes, or “triggers.” These may include foods, environmental stimuli (noises, lights, stress, etc.) and/or behaviors (insomnia, excessive exercise, blood sugar changes, etc.). Ninety-five percent of headaches are primary headaches, such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches.
“The majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck at the base of the skull as a result of poor posture where the head is in front of the body, reducing the normal curve that is essential for proper spinal function. This causes muscle spasm and tension at the base of the skull which partially occludes the sub occipital artery, reducing oxygen levels, creating the headache,” says Dr Keegan J Roper, a doctor of chiropractic at Inline Health & Wellness in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. “
The American Chiropractic Association suggests the following:
- If you spend a large amount of time in one fixed position, such as in front of a computer, on a smart phone or tablet, typing or reading, take a break and stretch every 30 minutes to one hour. The stretches should take your head and neck through a comfortable range of motion.
- Low-impact exercise may help relieve the pain associated with primary headaches. However, if you are prone to dull, throbbing headaches, avoid heavy exercise. Engage in such activities as walking and low-impact aerobics.
- Drink at least eight 8-ounce (or your body weight in pounds divided by 2 = the number of ounces you should drink) glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.
Your doctor of chiropractic may do one or more of the following if you suffer from a primary headache:
- Take X-rays of the neck to determine spinal alignment and health.
- Perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your spine and surrounding muscles.
- Educate the patient on the importance of posture, ergonomics, exercises and relaxation techniques.
