Prior to enjoying the benefits of boat ownership, the owner first needs to adhere to legalities called the Recreational Craft Directive or RCD. The RCD is a set of guidelines that determine the boat’s suitability for sale and use. Such guidelines are set by the European Union, and include aspects like identification and stability

When a boat complies with the RCD, then it is CE-marked. This process can be undertaken before or after the boat shipping. Prior to the marking, the company offering the service issues the client a proposal and appraisal indicating the necessary requirements. This also includes the schedule of processes from the inspection to the delivery of the boat which takes approximately two to three weeks.

The company that offers CE services also identifies non-conformities and the creation of the technical compliance file (TCF) for submission to the Notified Body. This file is created through Pro-Boat CE software and typically not provided to the client. The file is at least 100 pages and covers all 31 requirements of the RCD which ensures a comprehensive assessment of the recreational craft.

Prior to purchase, boat CE marking services like the CE Marking Assessment and CE Emissions Assessment are performed to ensure that you don’t pay for a craft that doesn’t follow legal regulations. The emissions assessment often causes conformity issues since some diesel engines are non-compliant to environmental requirements. A noise emission testing is also done to determine engine quality.

Other than documents and certifications, boat CE marking also comes in the form of a CE plate located close to the helm and in full view. Some boats can be exempt from the RCD thus won’t be required to carry a CE plate. Companies who offer the marking services can also determine whether your recreational vessel is fit to be exempted from CE marking.

There are some other processes involved in CE marking, and you can learn about this by directly consulting the company that offers the service. Make sure to find a certified organization that offers the required boat CE marking service. This takes the risk out of imported craft and ensures user safety.
