History of Indian universities

      India, before independence, didn’t get much help from its ruling powers in the field of higher education, so as soon as the new govt. formed after independence, they have to start the process from the very beginning. Only 20 universities and around 500 colleges were present in India to provide higher education in India at the time of Independence. But, India has shown significant improvement to increase the no. of colleges and universities in the country. India reached to about 179 universities at the end of 1990 which were then increased to around 511 at the time of financial year 2006-07 and after that, a large no. of universities has added to this data which is still increasing at the present time.

   India has both public and private universities. The public universities are supported by the Indian government and the state governments. The private universities are generally supported by different organization, groups and societies. In India, the universities are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), under the control of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. Fifteen additional professional councils are also established which help control the different facets of accreditation and coordination. There are four types of universities in India, they are; Central universities, State universities, Deemed universities and Private universities.

India is a home for Education. There are over 570 Universities and 45,000 Colleges of various types in the country. Most of these educational institutions need recognition by a competent body / regulatory authority that are supported by the Government of India, State Governments or by Societies.
