Seasonal allergy causes
A person can get seasonal allergies of course if he/she comes in contact with pollen. As a defense mechanism, the body tries to put up defenses in the respiratory tract especially the nose. But in some people, their bodies decide that the pollen is a threat thus it results in a bunch of antibodies in the person’s nose. Scientifically, the pollen is just trying to develop baby trees and is not trying to make us hurt but the body thinks otherwise and thus results in the release of histamine which causes swelling in the nose tissue and mucous production also increases. Itching is also caused due to histamine.
Seasonal allergy symptoms
Seasonal allergy symptoms can be categorically divided into three types mild, moderate and severe.
Mild allergy symptoms
Mild allergy does not spread to other body parts and include symptoms like;
- Localized itching.
Moderate allergy symptoms
This allergy can spread to other body parts and its symptoms include;
- Difficulty in breathing,
- Widespread itching.
Severe allergy symptoms
Also known as anaphylaxis, severe allergy symptoms can pose as a life threatening emergency where the sufferer’s body response towards the allergen can be sudden and thus can affect the whole body. Normal allergy symptoms catapult to more severe symptoms such as
- Itching of face or eyes
- Mental confusion or dizziness
- Abdominal pain
- Varying types of swellings which can make swallowing and breathing difficult
Seasonal allergy treatment
There are many measures in terms of treating seasonal allergies. The basic key is avoidance. After you have hay fever, it is better that you stay inside when the count of pollen is quite high. Several organizations have given a standard count for pollen and is easily available online and that too for free. News channels also sometimes report about it. In case you are allergic to, get hold of somebody to mow your lawn.
Usually, treatment is basically given to them who have already crossed the barrier of mild and the moderate stages. Patients with severe cases are given allergy shots which is also known as immunotherapy. This treatment includes purified allergens that are injected. So, if a person is allergic to a particular type of allergen, that pollen would be given by injection in a series. After a considerable amount of time, the body tends to change its response to that particular allergen. This cures some people of their seasonal allergy while others notice that their symptoms are a lot less.
