The employment of Opticians is expected to grow by 29% from 2010 to 2020, because of the growth of the Baby Boomers. The profession of optical dispensing and the need in vision products

is slated to be a good job to have the skills for, in the coming years. The awareness of the public, across all spectrums, is increasing, as everybody understands the importance of good eye care.

Eye problems, and the concern of the public about fixing the problems occur more frequently as people reach middle age. The need for opticians is expected to continue to grow as more of these people reach and exceed middle age. Optometrists and Ophthalmologists are both adding opticians to their respective staffs in order to offer more to their patients, and as a way to expand their businesses.

There will be even more of a demand for optical assistants in the areas of optical dispensing. There are a number of educational sources for people to become trained in these areas, where people can become well trained and qualify for jobs that will have a steady growth curve, and will be well-paid jobs.

A dispensing optician is a person who is trained to fit and dispense glasses and other optical aids, from prescriptions that are written by ophthalmologists and optometrists. The optician advises the patients on what kinds of lenses and frames are available, as well as helping with style, color, weight and overall look of the glasses. Advice is also offered as to the care of the glasses. More advanced training can also be taken in order to qualify for the dispensing of contact lenses, by being trained as a contact lens optician.

Most of the opticians who are dispensing optical devices work for high-end department stores, large, multiple-chain glasses specialty stores and for independent practices of optometrists and ophthalmologists. The person who does well at this sort of work is very adept with technical concepts and good customer service and people skills.

The field of optical dispensing is a wide open field, because of the wide variety of job opportunities which not only include the professional optical people such as the optometrists and ophthalmologists, but also the department stores, personal care stores, warehouse clubs, the superstores, and many more too numerous to mention. The potential is great as more and more baby boomers reach middle age and beyond, as they continue to need glasses and excellent eye care.
