In the last few years, it has been found that a large number of women suffer from uterine fibroids. Although these are benign tumours that are made of the smooth muscle similar to that of uterine wall, they are denser in comparison to normal uterine wall.  As far as shape of these tumours is considered, it is semi-round or round in shape. They are also known as Womb Tumours and are largely found in middle age women.

Uterine Fibroid Tumours are usually described on the basis of their location within the uterus. Intramural Fibroids are found inside the muscular wall of the uterus. Submucosal fibroids are found in the uterine cavity located below the uterus lining. Subserosal fibroids are located below the serosa, this is a lining membrane that is located on the exterior of the organ. These can be attached to the exterior surface by a pedicle or appear localized on the exterior surface of the uterus.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

By and large, majority of women who suffer from these tumours show no symptoms. However, one of the most common symptoms of the problem is heavy uterine bleeding. If uterine tumours are located near the lining of uterine or end up interfering with the blood flow that goes to the lining then they lead to painful and heavy menstrual periods or spotting between periods. Most of the women who have heavy periods develop anaemia because of blood loss.

Although there is nothing to authenticate that fibroids interfere with ovulation, there are studies that suggest they might affect fertility ultimately leading to problems in pregnancy. Particularly, it is the submucosal fibroids that damage the inner cavity of the uterine leading to the problems in pregnancy.

Treatment of Uterine Fibroids

There are different methods and therapies using which doctors treat the patient. They choose the treatment depending upon the intensity of the problem. Prescribing oral contraceptive method is one of the most common ways to reduce the problem of heavy bleeding. There are cases wherein doctors recommend having intrauterine contraceptive device that releases the hormone needed to reduce the bleeding.  Medication is also suggested as part of the Uterine Fibroids Treatment. In some cases, hormonal therapy for relatively smaller duration is also given to cut down the flow of heavy bleeding. Doctors try their best to help you get rid of the problem by prescribing non-invasive methods.

Women who are suffering from the problem of uterine fibroids should consult the doctor on an immediate basis. It is the rapid growth of the tumour that you should carefully watch as there is this rarest tumour that might develop into Womb Cancer although it is found only in one percent of the women.
