Why is HGV Training so Important for Drivers in the UK

In the UK, you should have a HGV (heavy good vehicle) license for driving heavy goods vehicles. For this, proper HGV driver training is essential because it can help you in getting the license within a short time. Driving heavy vehicles is not as easy as driving SUVs or cars. Specialized HGV training and driving knowledge is necessary for maneuvering heavy goods vehicles.

So what is a heavy goods vehicle?

All goods vehicles above 3500 kg are termed as heavy good vehicles. They comprise of trucks and lorries that are used in the transportation of commercial goods such as construction material, heavy equipments, chemicals and foods.

What is the procedure to get a HGV driver's license

You need appropriate licenses for becoming a HGV driver in the UK and EU. Actually, HGV driving is further subdivided into 4 categories - C1+E, C1, C and C+E. Even though aspiring drivers take the same driving test for all categories, but the qualifying marks for each category vary considerably.

Features of HGV training course

The HGV license training course will prepare you for different HGV driving categories as discussed above. It emphasizes on maneuvering goods vehicles in the diverse driving conditions. In most of the cases, your trainer will take your initial driving experience into consideration before designing a course for you.

While practical driving session in the course will prepare you for passing the driving test necessary for getting a provisional driving license, to be eligible for a driving license in the relevant category, you will have to clear the theoretical test.

During your training, you will be exposed to various types of roads. You will be trained in handling different types of vehicles in different types of road conditions. Depending upon your learning ability and skills, you may take 4-8 days to complete this practical training.

The theoretical test consists of two parts. The overall driving knowledge and aptitude and multiple choice part tests.The first part deals with one's hazard perception and is a totally computer based test. You will have to clear both parts to get your HGV driver licene. The multiple choice test may vary depending upon the category you are interested in.

In order to secure the driving license for the higher category, you should be at least 21 years of age. You can easily upgrade your HGV driving license to a higher category by clearing practical tests in that particular category. However, you will be exempted from appearing in the theory test that you may have cleared in your earlier HGV driver training test.
