Become a Massage Therapist in Chicago

The art of massage therapy is one that provides a number of health and wellness benefits. In addition to stress reduction and relaxation, massage is a highly effective alternative approach to healing. If you are looking for a meaningful career in holistic approaches to wellness, consider a career as a massage therapist.

Massage therapists can find work in a number of different environments, offering both flexibility and diversity in the field. Therapists are in demand throughout the city of Chicago in spas, health and fitness clubs, chiropractic centers, holistic health centers, hospitals, and physical and occupational therapy centers. Licensed massage therapists also have the ability to start their own businesses. Some therapists even work out of their own homes where they can work as their own boss, set their own hours, and enjoy the flexibility of a customized day to day schedule.

There are two different educational routes you can take in order to become a massage therapist in Illinois. Students can choose either a massage certificate program or an Associate Degree in Applied Science program. Look for massage schools in Chicago that offer both options and choose the program that will best meet your educational and career goals.

Students who successfully complete a degree program will be awarded with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Massage Therapy. Degree programs require over 100 credit hours of coursework. Students can choose to study massage therapy with either a medical or business emphasis, based on personal and professional preference.

A massage certificate program requires only 43 credit hours. Although a college degree is not awarded upon completion, it is a faster and more cost-effective approach for prospective students who may have financial constraints or for those looking for a faster path toward their new career. The credits earned in a certificate program can be applied toward a degree program for those who may wish to pursue additional education and a degree in the future.

Both programs combine traditional classwork with practical, hands-on clinical training in the field.

Once you have successfully completed your program’s requirements, you will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage licensing exam.
