A trip to the abortion clinic is probably one of the most uncomfortable trips a woman can take. However, certain circumstances arise and women are led to choosing abortion over any other option because it is—I don’t know—perhaps the most convenient or the most favorable option for their current circumstances. Just because abortion is the option you chose, it does not mean you will enjoy your time with it. There is always a sense of guilt or sadness or depression when undergoing abortion. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to turn this experience into something less of a heartache.
Bring a trusted companion as your chaperon
Your companion can be anyone, as long as you are certain that he or she will be nothing but supportive and caring to you. If you believe you mother will just nag you all throughout your stay, don’t bring her. If you predict that your best friend will go on talking about hell and damnation, leave her to pray for your soul in her own house. Bring along that friend or family member who totally understands your situation, preferably someone who already underwent that same situation before.
Bring stuff that will entertain not only you (while waiting for your appointed operation) but your companion as well. Well, music is already a given. Just make sure that your favorite playlists are inside your phone or mp3 player or iPod. If possible, listen to relaxing songs to calm your nerves from all your abortion jitters. Bring your favorite book. If you prefer comic books, then by all means, carry some with you. Bring cards so you can play poker while waiting for further instructions from your doctor.
Follow your doctor’s every instruction
Try to lessen your complaints and instead, listen intently to your doctor’s instructions. If ever your operation does not come as soon as you expected, try to be patient. Perhaps your abortion clinic is following certain safety and security, and privacy protocols before moving on to the actual operation. If you lessen your complaining and grumbling and follow every instruction systematically, you will find that the day is already done and that you have survived your dreaded operation. Just be a good patient and trust your doctor. Believe me. You will get by just fine.
Avoid negative thoughts
Negative thoughts are the ultimate bummer. You are already in a difficult situation. Abstain from surrounding yourself and crowding your mind with negativity. Listen to feel-good music. Talk about happy moments with the companion you brought along. Read love poetry. Sing with the songs in your playlists. If you really can’t help it and negative thoughts keep on making their way into your consciousness, think of how you can rationalize the issues that invade your mind and look for a silver lining. That way, you will not be ridden with your dark thoughts just as much. You don’t have to lie or convince yourself that there are no negativity in this whole situation. You just have to try to look into the brighter side of things so you can stop tormenting yourself.
