People all over the world are learning that they can set their own hours, be their own boss and bring home the bacon all from the comfort of their own house. If you have considered working from home, here are some tips to consider.

Pretend you are going to the office when you work from home. You might think that defeats the purpose but when friends and neighbors find out that you are working from home, you might become the go-to person for child care, signing for packages or someone to vent to on long telephone calls. Simply determine your hours and focus on your work. Let calls unrelated to work go to voice mail and save your home emails for later. Stay off Facebook and other social networking sites unless being there is imperative to your job.

Set up a designated space that serves as your office. It may help for tax purposes and also you will have all your necessary supplies and equipment in one place. While it might be good to take your laptop out on the deck on nice days, keep your work separate by maintaining a home office area for the most part.

Give yourself a learning curve so you can get up to speed just like you would if you worked for someone else. If you are currently in a job and have decided to start your own business working online from home, save up some money to see you through the start-up of your business. Make a realistic budget of office supplies, marketing materials, ad space, etc. That you might need for your business. If you work for yourself, you will have to pay your own health insurance costs so include premiums into your budget. Also budget some time so you can take a vacation or a sick day when you need it.

Create a schedule of tasks that need to be accomplished during the day. You are now responsible for taking care of all work-related issues and you will be doing your own marketing, advertising, networking, accounting and business development tasks. Make sure you keep a running log of everything that you need to have done for your business and check it off as you go. Do not allow yourself to get bogged down with details either. If you need a logo for your company and it is going to take you 20 hours to create a nice one, think about outsourcing the work to a graphic designer. Focus on growing your business and consider handing off some of the non-essential work to contractors if possible.
