Retention ponds have becomemore commonall over the world nowadays, especially in developed countries. A Retention pond is adepressed area created to catch water overflow from areas at a higherelevation for the purpose of water collection and flood prevention. In the US, Environmental Protection Agency, EPA has guidelines and requirements in place for new infrastructure construction. When creating new buildings and roads, proposal plans must include flood or water management, and in most cases, is the use of retention ponds which may be in the form lakes and rivers among others.

Retention ponds normally come with a detention pond. Detention ponds on the other handtemporarily stores water, then with a controlled rate of water flow transports the water to the retention pond. Detention ponds allow large amount of water storage but limits the outflow by having a small outlet at the bottom of it.  Retention pond permanently holds water while detention pond temporarily holds water, which makes it a dry pond in most days.

The combination of retention and detention pond is a very useful strategy to manage and prevent urban flooding and downstream erosion. During rainy days, rainwater is channelled to a retention pond by flowing on the streets, parking lot drains and piping systems in place then into the detention pond and finally into the retention pond. This system is also made to improve water quality as it washes off pollutants and garbage on the streets and these settles at the bottom of the detention pond and not transported to the retention pond.

Water in retention pond can be utilized in a variety of ways. It can be for aesthetics purposes or used for agricultural irrigation for example. With water being such a precious commodity, it is extremely important that this is not wasted, which is why in most cases, pond liners are utilized in this application. By lining the pond, this saves water by preventing it from seeping into the ground.
