Prior to the BlackBerry, getting any type of work completed in the corporate world meant that you had to be actually there in the office. Both employees and bosses nowadays have the chance to talk with co-workers, keep track essential dates anytime and anywhere, and go over work e-mail. As of this writing, the current versions of BES are 4.1 and 5.0.

Version 4.1

Similar to its predecessor, BES v4.1 incorporates the Domino, GroupWise, and Exhange codebases. Version 4.1 has added features such as BlackBerry Instant Messenger (BBIM), MDS Services (MDSS), PhoneCallLog, PINLog, and SMSLog. From v4.1.2 onwards, users can have a secure wireless gateway with no an e-mail account. This version is available up to version 4.1.7.

You can completely integrate the BBIM with other device functions. On the other hand, it's uncomplicated to set up mobile apps using the MDSS. The PhoneCallLog, PINLog, and SMSLog improve the way you track calls, PINs, and text messages, respectively. Other enhancements over v4.0 include better viewing of attachments, extra security functions, and enhanced address lookup functions.

Version 5.0

Compared to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1, which employs BlackBerry Manager, version 5.0 makes use of BlackBerry Administration Service. With this, network administrators have a more granular level of control over their accounts. For instance, they can designate multiple functions to a single user, enable multiple groups to share a single role, or add users to groups. For an improved security, they can also keep users from gaining access to other users' accounts or groups.

Although high availability of administrators has been a function of BES software for a while, it's only in BlackBerry Enterprise Server v5.0 that you can allow this function out of the box at no cost. You can also achieve high availability with v5.0 using a hardware network load balancer or a DNS round robin. Services that can accomplish high availability include BlackBerry MDS Connection Service, BlackBerry MDS Integration Service, BlackBerry Monitoring (manual only), BlackBerry Router, and BlackBerry Collaboration Service.

With the frequent addition of new features on BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, you can expect considerably enhanced productivity in your workplace. If you wish to manage the BES better, you can get reference from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit. For even more details on upgrading from v4.1 to v5.0, check out the guide at
