Workplace safety should be a top priority in any company. The workers’ safety and well-being should be of the utmost concern of any large company or industry – as workplace accidents can bring lawsuits and a bad reputation to the company which can result to bad business. In high-risk and hazardous workplaces where accidents are likely to occur, it is better that safety rules and regulations are set in place.

Some typical causes of accidents include bad weather conditions, human error, or unstable structures. With safety regulations, risks can be minimised as such directives require the regular examination and maintenance of the structural integrity of platforms, walkways and other workspaces, and the proper use and preservation of personal protective equipment for all employees.

When a job entails working at heights, fall protection equipment should be the first thing a company should provide to protect employees against falls. Fall protection safety devices such as personal fall-arrest systems, safety nets, and height safety systems minimise hazards and can also ensure that should accidents happen, the workers will not get seriously injured. However, companies should also make sure that employees know and are trained to recognise workplace hazards to further minimise risks.

All employees need and should properly utilise fall arrest protection equipment, including those who are highly qualified or experienced in this type of work, as anyone can lose their balance, grip or trip and slip anytime. Experienced workers might think that their skills and work familiarity can protect them, but they are not exempt from accidents and workplace dangers. Disabling falls from roof access ladders, rooftops and scaffoldings due to loss of balance, shifting or unstable ladders and structures are quite common in most construction sites.

Some working facilities also require the installation and use of other safety devices such as guardrails or leading edges which provides workers with handgrips while standing on elevated surfaces. If the work space do not have any of these guardrails and is located more than six feet off the ground, then the worker should be provided with additional safety devices such as safety harnesses, safety nets, fall arrest anchors and other personal protective equipment to keep the person safe in case of an accident.

Everyone wants to avoid accidents as much as possible, and every company should take their employees’ safety and well-being into the utmost consideration. Properly implemented and practised workplace safety rules and regulations will not only save employees’ lives and prevent accidents, but it will also contribute to the company’s long-term success in terms of maintaining a good reputation, lawsuit avoidance, and mounting employee costs and pay-outs. Other advantages in the workplace are improved employee productivity and attendance, fewer insurance and workers’ compensation claims, reduced staff turnover and high overall employee morale. Hence, it is quite obvious that a proper workplace safety program will benefit both the company and its employees.
