We’re often asked if tiles work better on floors or as a wall covering. The answer’s simple – they work on both!

Gone are the days when tiles were first choice for bathroom floors and splashbacks only, with anything else an after-thought.

Do some digging and you’ll find that tiles have long been a favoured choice for floor coverings in all sorts of rooms, going right back to Ancient Greek and Roman times.

Bedrooms, patios, balconies, swimming pools, garages, and passage ways all benefit from being tiled rather than using alternative coverings.

Why? Again, it’s simple, really.

Firstly, tiles are functional. They’re easy to clean and maintain and don’t require re-surfacing (like polished wooden floors) or rejuvenation (like carpets.)

When you’re talking sandstone tiles don’t have the same issues of crumbling or losing their initial sheen.

Tiles are cool in hot weather and relatively easy to keep warm in cooler climates. Under-floor heating or radiated heat work very well and floor coverings like a rug make a big difference.

Porcelain tiles, for example, are tough and very durable. They are also a natural heat bank, are child and asthma friendly, don’t give off CFCs and are fireproof.

Another compelling reason to pump for tiles as floor or wall coverings, however, is that they look fantastic. Textured finishes that emulate stone or wood in many cases look better than the real thing.

When selecting ceramic tiles, you need to consider the job they are intended for to ensure they are suitable. Most ceramic floor tiles are rated on a scale of 1-5 according to what sort of traffic they’ll accommodate.

Almost any flooring can become slippery when wet, and ceramic tiles are no exception. Surface dust can also contribute to this. Floor mats help in both circumstances.

Tiles with a skid resistant surface on a floor can reduce this tendency, but the advantages are offset by a rough surface being more difficult to clean.

Ceramic tiles look great on walls and should become an integral part of your home. Careful selection will enhance and protect your home and add to its capital value. Consider your tiling as a long term investment, even though it is an economical exercise.
