The race of an MBA aspirant generally seems like a rat race where each one of them is running to get his part of cheese from the CAT. The ironical Rat-Cat relation exists even here as it is not an easy task to get through the claws of CAT to land up in the desired B-School. It requires understanding of what is CAT exam exactly and accordingly gearing up with the tools to crack it.

CAT, also known as Common Admission Test, is generally an all India exam conducted by the IIMs i.e Indian Institute of Management which is among the most prestigious Business schools in India. An aspirant has to compulsorily qualify the CAT exam to get into an IIM. CAT exam is just the first step and is followed by Group discussion and Personal Interview rounds. Apart from IIMs, CAT exam is also accepted at top schools like SP Jain, TAPMI, etc.

CAT examines the aspirant's skills in five broad areas namely –

Verbal ability and reasoning

Reading comprehension

Quantitative skills

Data Interpretation

Analytical and Logical Reasoning

Apart from CAT there are other set of national level entrance exams like XAT, NMAT, SNAP, CMAT, etc. which follows the similar pattern and are accepted by varied set of reputed Bschools.

From 2009 onwards, CAT exam is being conducted online in computer-based-test format and responsibility of conducting has been given to an American firm Prometric. It is normally conducted over a 20-day testing window during the months of October and November. A candidate can appear only once during this testing period in a particular year and also the CAT exam scores will only be valid only for that particular year. It is very important to carefully examine the CAT syllabus to get an overview of the test pattern.
