A significant factor in the development of the beef market in Russia, is the reduced number of cattle in Russia. Thus, during the 2000 – 2011, the number of cattle decreased annually. The Russian beef market consists mainly of domestic production. The share of imports tends to decrease.

The production of beef has a low level of concentration. In 2012, the share of the largest producer accounted for less than 5%. The largest volume of beef in 2012 was produced in the Siberian Federal District. In second place came the Central Federal District. The combined share of these two Districts accounts for over 50%.
