Recipe of Indian mushroom tikka masala

Ever since chicken tikka masala and chicken butter masala has taken the world by a storm there have been many more similar recipes. Mushroom has been a favorite with both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. So here is an easy mushroom recipe in the famous tikka masala style.


This is one of the most easy mushroom recipes. To prepare the vegetable for it you will need the following ingredients;

Fresh white button mushrooms: 9oz (15 to 16 mushrooms)

Large green or red bell pepper: 1 (cut in cubes)

Greek yogurt or strained yogurt: ¼ cup

Turmeric Powder: ¼ teaspoon

Chili powder: ¼ teaspoon (use less for less heat)

Cooking oil: 1 tablespoon

Ingredients required to make the gravy;

Vegetable oil: 2 tablespoons

Cumin seeds: 3/4 teaspoon

onion: 1 large (minced)

Ginger-garlic paste: 2 teaspoons

Tomato puree: 3 - 4 tomatoes pureed

Coriander powder: ½ teaspoon

Cumin powder: ½ teaspoon

Turmeric powder: 1/4 teaspoon

Chili powder: 1/4 teaspoon (use less for less heat)

Dry kasoori methi: 2 tablespoons

Heavy cream: 2 tablespoons (optional)

Salt: to taste

Cooking directions

Take a wok and heat oil in it, add cumin seeds and wait for it to sizzle, then add the minced onion. Once the onion is fried to light brown add the ginger and garlic paste to it, stir fry for a few seconds before adding the tomato puree to it. Now add the turmeric, chili, cumin and coriander powder to it. Mix all these together and let it cook on medium heat.

Keep an eye on the gravy while it is cooking in the wok. Should take around 10 to 12 minutes for the spices to cook up as this is one of the quick and easy mushroom recipes.

While the gravy is cooking clean and cut the mushrooms. Now take a bowl and mix the mushrooms, pepper, yoghurt, turmeric and chilli powder together.

Take a frying pan and add oil to it, once the oil is heated, put the mushroom and pepper mixture into it. Saute it for a few minutes till the mushrooms turn golden. Do not stir it too much or the mushrooms will not change color.

Now check if the gravy is properly cooked in the wok. If yes, then add the golden brown mushrooms and peppers into it. Cook for another 2 – 3 minutes. Finally, add salt and kasoori methi before turning the heat off. If you are using heavy cream, add it after turning the heat off.

Your mushroom tikka masala is ready. Garnish it with chopped cilantro and serve it hot with Indian bread or white rice.
