If you know about Hindu cultures & religion even marginally, you must have heard of Amarnath Yatra. This pilgrimage to holy adobe of lord Shiva amidst snowy Himalayan peaks allows the devotees to catch glimpse of iced Shiva lingam and is truly a lifetime experience for Hindus. It takes place during months of July-August and is organized by the Jammu & Kashmir Govt. However, the dates of starting and closing of the pilgrimage may vary according to weather conditions.

The holy Amarnath shrine is located about 140km from Srinagar, at a height of 14,500 ft, on the northernmost end of the Lidder Valley. The presence of beautiful mountains, shimmering streams & rivers and deep endless valleys give the travelers a heavenly feel. However, the pilgrims need to trek more than 30km through strenuous paths and inclement weather conditions. Climatic conditions in the region are very uncertain. You don’t know when it might start raining or snowfall. At high altitude, especially at Mahgan Path and Panchtarini, pilgrims start to feel oxygen deficiency. Temperature may fall below freezing level at some places.

Then how to perform Yatra in such tough conditions? Well, you must be physically fit and mentally strong if you happen to opt for this journey. Carrying woolen clothes and other required accessories like rain coat, an umbrella (preferably the small one), walking stick, torch and a personal medical kit etc. is advised to each and every pilgrim. Another thing which is imperative is the advance preparation for the Yatra. Start daily morning/evening walk of about 4-5km at least a month prior to Yatra date. Doing some breathing exercises, yoga and pranayam can also be handy in your preparation.

Keep your pace according to your capacity, and don’t be too fast or too slow. Take necessary rest when you need it. Take a water bottle and dry fruits to reenergize you! Don’t opt for short cuts and try to be with your group only. Several instructions are issued by the Yatra administration and the security agencies. All the pilgrims are advised to follow them. It is not a fun-trip, so playing something unethical will be insensible. Keep your mind cool and chant ‘Om Namah Shivai’ to give yourself a boost. For ladies, saari is not a suitable dress on Yatra. They should opt for wearing salwar kammej or track suit instead.

For safety reason, it is mandatory for every devotee to bring a medical certificate from an authorized hospital. Advance reservation for Yatra is also necessary. But from this year onward, online reservation for the Yatra is closed. Today, a wide range of packages are offered by travel agencies for an easy and comfortable pilgrimage.
