Land Stewardship is the movement started to bring about an ethic governing stewardship for the farmland. It’s a drive to promote a sustainable agriculture while developing sustainable communities. Land Stewardship involves both rural and urban farmers that need to work together to not only secure a bountiful food supply but also to ensure that soil, water and wildlife are preserved. Land Stewardship must support farms while organizing the communities in the incorporation of changes in the mindset. This is also meant for holding both corporations and the local government accountable if it is found that these are violating the basic tenets of land stewardship. With Land Stewardship it is hoped that a new vision will be created for a sustainable food and agriculture system existing in harmony with the environment. The stewardship ethic will include the protection of natural biodiversity besides soil and water on agriculture land. The new policy also aims to provide incentives/rewards to those farmers that provide various environmental and social benefits for the society. A new concept of Agro Ecology has now evolved from Land Stewardship.
Agro Ecology is meant to achieve collaboration between those that advocate sustainable agriculture and those supportive of natural habitat preservation. With this collaboration the ability of the land to produce food while supporting the environment will be enhanced to a sustainable state. One of the biggest problems facing farmers today is in the matter of farm runoff. Farm runoff occurs whenever farmland is unable to absorb excessive moisture in the soil. This excessive water may be the result of a deluge or heavy snowfall. Runoff results when the soil can no longer absorb the excess water. Farm runoff consists of not only manure runoff but also large quantities of soil that results in soil erosion. The entire runoff termed as agriculture runoff leaves the farm fields and ultimately reaches rivers and lakes. Way back in 1972 it was recognised that agriculture runoff contains several chemicals and other pollutants that are harmful for environment that not only includes wild animals and plant life but also humans that depend on water features for consumption. Today agriculture runoff is the third leading source of pollution in the US. It has been observed in field trials that the use of effective aerators increases the capacity of farmland to absorb water thereby reducing agriculture runoff to a large extent.
You must take land stewardship seriously
