LisbonLisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a popular tourist destination. The city boasts of a vibrant and rich culture that attracts people from all over the world. It climate in the city also is highly conducive to tourism, with the city enjoying subtropical climate throughout the year. The summers are warm and so is the winter, which allows people to escape the harsh winters in Western Europe and North America and enjoy lovely warm sunshine.

Attractions in the City

The city is filled with architectural marvels, beautiful castles and palaces and magnificent monuments that are worth checking out. With so many things to do in Lisbon, you may get overwhelmed. But it is best to start with the most popular sights and attractions.

Some of the buildings housing popular museums are attractions by themselves, such as the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian and Museu do Azulejo. Besides enjoying the beautiful displays in these museums, you will also get mesmerized by the architecture.

The Rossio Square is the main square in the city. When you head here visit the square, you will be able to see a blend of cultures. Sitting at one of the pavement cafés will allow you to take in all this and some more.

If you want to enjoy art, culture and monuments, head to the Belem District. Here you can see the amazing Belem Tower and the massive Jeronimos Monastery. Make it a point to visit the CCB where you can see a permanent display of paintings by Duchamp, Dali and Picasso. In addition, find out how the royals used to travel by visiting the Coach Museum, which house royal coaches and other means of transportation.

The nightlife in Lisbon is energetic and exciting. You can visit the local bars in the city to taste ginjinhais, which is an alcoholic beverage made from ginja berries. Bairro Alto is the place to check out youth culture. Here you will be able to enjoy punk, heavy metal, reggae, hip hop and goth music. Bairro Alto is also a great place to visit during the day for its book stores and art galleries.

Beach lovers can head to Estoril and Cascais which are located close to the capital. You can spend a relaxing day in these two beaches and enjoy some thrilling and fun water activities. You can also take a short train ride that meanders along the coast and gives you a panoramic view of the Portuguese Riviera. You can catch the train from the Cais do Sodre Station.

Do make is a point to visit the longest bridge in Europe, the Vasco da Gama Bridge. It extends 10.7 miles over the Tagus. It is a fabulous demonstration of engineering and architecture.
