Are you unable to verify or repair an unmountable Mac OS X hard drive volume using Disk Utility? Does Disk Utility stop responding without any error message while repairing unmountable volume? You should not try to repair a non-startup Mac OS X volume, which cannot be unmounted, using this disk repair tool. It may cause serious damage to the volume and make it completely unusable. This behavior leads to critical data loss and need Mac Recovery to be sorted out.

Disk Utility may stall your Mac machine for several seconds, or stop responding without any error message, while trying to repair or verify a non-startup Mac volume, which is unmountable. If you repair a hard drive volume, which isn't a startup volume, the disk verification may start but then halted without any warning message. When you check the Console (located at /Applications/Utilities/), you see an entry similar to the following one:

“Verifying volume <volume name>
The disk <volume name> could not be unmounted
Could not unmount disk for verification, attempting live verify”

When you attempt to repair a Mac volume, which is unmountable, the disk repair process starts, but then cannot complete. It stops halfway and Disk Utility gives you the below error message:

“Repairing disk failed with error. Could not unmount disk.”

If you look into the Console, the below error message appears:

“Verify and Repair disk <volume name>
The disk <volume name> could not be unmounted
Could not unmount disk for verification
Repairing disk failed with error. Could not unmount disk”

In such situations, the disk can not be repaired and remains inaccessible. In order to gain access of your mission-critical data, you need to perform Data Recovery Mac by fixing the problem.

This problem may occur if you have an open file on the volume, while verifying or repairing it. Reboot your system and then run Disk Utility again. If it can not resolve the issue, the problem may be due to corrupt volume or file system of volume. In such situations, you need to format the volume and use Mac Recovery Software to retrieve lost data.

These are powerful third-party tools, which are capable of methodically scanning whole hard drive volume and extract all lost, missing, and inaccessible data from it. They enable safe and easy Mac File Recovery with non-destructive nature and interactive user interface.
