If you wondered if there is a link between two of India’s commercial capitals, Mumbai and Mangalore, well there is. It is through the railway line connecting these two regions. Konkan Railway is a 760 km long railway route that runs through the Indian states of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. The Konkan region is a rugged one with dense forests, mountains and rivers covering the region. This region is actually a coastal strip of land which is economically rich and is known for its mineral resources. The Sahyadri Hills lie to the east of the region while the Arabian Sea lies to its west and this journey is well known to have some of he most picturesque views.

Here you can easily spot paddy fields and coconut and mango trees. A very short construction period and rough land filled with adversities meant that innovative technologies had to be used. This project undoubtedly sets a trend of other future projects of the department. There is a total of 56 railway stations on the line and the route although a single line, it runs as a parallel line with the South Western Railway from Majorda to Margao in the Indian state of Goa. This is where it is a double line. Although in tickets you will see the length of the route being mentioned as 1034 km, in reality it is 738 km which is 40% less than the mentioned length. This is considered to make calculating the train fare less troublesome.

The entire route is a single line track is not electrified. It was built to handle trains running at a high speed of 160 kms per hour or 99 mph although the fastest train that runs on this route which is the Trivandrum Rajdhani Express runs at a speed of 110 kms per hour or 68 mph. This route is meant for both passengers and freight and it runs parallel to the Arabian Sea coast. The Konkan Railway crosses the NH-17 national highway at certain points. The hostile weather and rough terrain have been a problem in this region ever since the beginning.

The first problem cropped in the year 1998 when there was a landslide because of heavy rains in this part of the country. Although steps were taken by the corporation to correct this problem, it keeps happening almost every year. This project not only is a trendsetter, but is also a proof of the skills, team spirit, discipline and courage of engineers of the Railway Department. It was these very engineers who accomplished the feat and made the slowly fading dream of the people of the Konkan region come true with the establishment of the Konkan Railway.
