People often ask whether Idenics® is therapy or an alternative therapy. Idenics is not therapy or an alternative therapy. One thing that therapy and alternative therapy have in common is that in some way the practitioners of these methods are trying to analyze or figure a person out. As an Idenics practitioner this is NOT something that I do. People are unique and different, and they look at life from different viewpoints and respond to upsets, traumas and confusions differently. Actually, it would be almost impossible to figure someone out. With six billion people on this planet, all of them different, a practitioner of therapy or alternative therapy would have better odds winning the lottery twice in a row or finding a needle in ten thousand haystacks than to figure a person out. As an Idenics practitioner all that I am doing is getting the person to look. My entire job is to get a person to look, and keep their nose in what they are looking at until they have fully inspected what is there. That’s all that I do. I didn’t live their life or have their experience; so how would I know.

A person suffering from, let’s say, low self-esteem goes to someone practicing therapy or alternative therapy. What does the practitioner of that therapy or alternative therapy do? Based on the practitioner’s training and experience in that therapy or alternative therapy, the practitioner will ask questions and give advice regarding the person’s low self-esteem, in an effort to bring that person to some understanding already determined by the practitioner of that therapy or alternative therapy. But this person’s low self-esteem is not like someone else’s low self-esteem. How that person’s low self-esteem is for them, how that person’s low self-esteem affects their life, where that person’s low self-esteem originated is different. The word low self-esteem is only a word. But a word is only a symbol, and is not the thing itself. Instead of the word low self-esteem, let’s look at the word “cat.” The word is only something that we use to communicate about something real.

A cat is that furry creature that runs around your house looking cute. The word “cat” is only a symbol. The practitioner of that therapy or alternative therapy is basing everything he/she is doing on a word – a symbol. What if instead of low self-esteem, the person said to the therapy or alternative therapy practitioner that he had a condition he calls the “wobbles.” The practitioner of that therapy or alternative therapy wouldn’t know what to do. That practitioner of that therapy or alternative therapy would have to get the person to explain what was meant by the wobbles. But unlike a condition on low self-esteem; what if the person couldn’t explain it? Where would the practitioner of therapy or alternative therapy go from there? In Idenics we don’t work from some preconceived ideas or try to fit people into some category.

I don’t know what the person means by wobbles, but HE or SHE knows what they mean by it, even if they can’t describe or explain it to another. THEY know what they are looking at. The same goes for the person’s low self-esteem. This person’s low self-esteem is unique, and I don’t know anything about this person low self-esteem like I don’t know what he/she means by the wobbles – something the practitioner of that therapy or alternative therapy thinks he/she knows. Even if the person wasn’t giving me a personal unwanted condition he/she was suffering from such as low self-esteem, because that person couldn’t even verbalize the condition at all, I could work with that person; something that the practitioner of therapy or alternative therapy could not do. As an Idenics practitioner it doesn’t matter if a client tells me they are suffering from low self-esteem or the wobbles. I don’t really know what they mean by either.

Unlike the practitioner of therapy or alternative therapy, in Idenics we do not work from any preconceived ideas of how people are or should be. Even conditions like low self-esteem are an individual matter, and one person’s low self-esteem is not the same as another person’s low self-esteem, no matter how much some practitioner of therapy or alternative therapy treats them as the same. Idenics is a methodology that is completely non-evaluative and nonjudgmental, unlike most methods of therapy or alternative therapy. People come to us with to handle or resolve their personal unwanted conditions like low self-esteem, but Idenics is NOT therapy or an alternative to therapy, which I have pretty much lumped together under the category of therapy. Idenics is an alternative to therapy.
