Tapeworm Infection

Tapeworm is a class of parasitic flatworm. It infects human intestinal tracts. The tapeworm infection happens due to having contaminated food or water with tapeworm larvae or eggs. The tapeworm eggs migrate inside your intestines and produce larval cysts in body organs and tissue if you ingest these tapeworm eggs. If you ingest tapeworm larvae, they generally develop into adult tapeworms in your intestines. This adult tapeworm consists of neck, head and chain of segments which is called proglottids. When you have an intestinal tapeworm infection, the tapeworm head adheres to the intestinal wall, and the proglottids grow and produce eggs. These Adult tapeworms can live in the host for up to 20 years. This intestinal tapeworm infection is generally mild, but invasive larval infections can cause serious problems.

Different Types of Tapeworm

Six types of tapeworm infections are as follows.

  •  Beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata)

The Beef tapeworm comes from cows. It can be found anywhere in cattle farming. People can get infected by eating beef that has worm cysts in it. This tapeworm grows inside the human intestine up to twenty five feet in length.

Pork tapeworm is very common in South America, India, Eastern Europe and China. The person is infected with Pork tapeworm by eating undercooked pork as well as drinking and eating contaminated water or food. This tapeworm grows inside the human intestine up to twenty one feet in length.

In a disease known as cysticerci, tapeworm cysts penetrate the intestine as well as travel through the arteries and infect various tissues like the spinal cord, muscle, eyes and brain. It is very difficult to diagnose as the symptoms can occur after months or even years.

  • Fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium latum)

The fish tapeworm infection is found in Japan, Europe, North and South America, also in some parts of Africa. This also occurs by eating undercooked fish. This tapeworm grows inside the human intestine up to twenty five feet in length.

  • Rodent tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana)

Humans are affected by Rodent Tapeworm thorough an intermediate carrier like beetles, cockroach, fleas that carry cysts. It can grow up to twenty inches long in the intestine.

  • Dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum)

It is similar to rodent tapeworm. Dog tapeworm can infect usually children, who accidentally ingest infected louse or flea. It can grow up to twenty four inches long in the intestine.

  • Dwarf tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana)

Man is the native host for dwarf tapeworm. Ingestion of these tapeworms spreads to another human body through food contamination with feces. As compared to other tapeworms, Dwarf tapeworm is the smallest. It can grow up to twelve inches in the intestine.
