This is where the world’s oldest rainforest meets the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, two world heritage listed ecosystems existing side by side.
Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, stunning beaches, crystal clear waterholes, the Prema Shanti Temple provided the perfect ambience for a unique holiday experience.
The beauty of the surrounding rainforest spills onto the grounds of the temple, which was blessed by his Holiness the Dalai Lamas Gyuto Monks in1997. This exquisite setting provided an opportunity to both relax, and explore the wonders of the Daintree rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. There was also a wide range of activities to choose from, including diving and snorkeling, rainforest walks, and spa and massage treatments toping my to do list.
The yoga and meditation temple is situated upstairs above the accommodation and provided the perfect ambience for yoga, meditation, and for me, a place to dance, relax, practice yoga, and connect with others. There is a full 360 degree verandah on the top floor, complete with hanging chairs, sofas, hammocks and bean bags to view the incredible flora and fauna on show, including the much beloved resident ‘Randi the Bandicoot’ and many bush scrub turkeys, parrots and other creatures that frequent the grounds of the Prema Shanti yoga retreat.
Scrumptious vegetarian delights are prepared nightly by Mara, with none of our group of a dozen retreat participants ever left wanting for more food. Mara even has a cookbook for sale of her amazing dishes – they are that good!
This is a very special place. The retreat is nestled in the heart of the Daintree, giving access to magnificent unspoilt beaches, the Great Barrier Reef and sacred aboriginal sites including an amazing tranquil waterhole only a five minute walk away.
The retreat is intimate and personal and features beautiful statues and rock formations which have been blessed by Tibetan monks. A large verandah provides space to rest, read or simply gaze at the rainforest and visiting wildlife such as rare miniature kangaroos. Expect to live simply and in an Eco-friendly way – which is very liberating as the affectations of city life drop away.
Run by a husband and wife team, the yoga is outstanding – taught with humility and great expertise and geared sensitively to the level of the student. They also make the perfect hosts, giving you the right balance of personal space and helpful advice. The perfect place to refresh, rejuvenate, practice yoga, reconnect with nature and yourself.
