According to WBTV-3, 12 people were sent to the hospital three days before Christmas when a CATS city bus and a Chevy truck were involved in an accident at the corner of North Tryon and East 16th Street. Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services said that the accident occurred around 8 a.m. on Thursday morning, December 22.
At the scene of the accident, EMS personnel treated 12 victims. All of the victims were transported by ambulance to area hospitals. Seven were taken to CMC, and the other five were taken to Presbyterian Hospital. One of the victims had life-threatening injuries.
An accident involving a bus has the potential for many more victims because of the number of people involved and the fact that bus passengers are not required to be buckled in and typically move more freely about the vehicle. This potential was realized on the morning of December 22 when 12 victims had to be taken to the hospital.
In addition to the increased risk for physical injury when a bus is involved in an accident, there is also a sense of injustice when the public transportation that people rely upon to get them to their jobs betrays the trust and confidence of the public it is meant to serve. It is not unreasonable for people to expect to remain safe on city buses, and when that does not happen, it is not unreasonable that they be justly compensated.
