Dental braces or orthodontic braces are the devices used in the orthodontic treatment that align and straighten teeth and help the teeth to get positioned with regard to a patient’s oral structure. By applying braces the orthodontists actually try to improve the overall dental condition of a patient. Some of the common problems where orthodontic braces are used include: under bites, malocclusions, overbites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites, crooked teeth, and others.

Historically speaking, dental braces were also used in ancient time too. Around 400-300 BC, Hippocrates and Aristotle researched on the ways to straighten teeth and they invented artificial ways to fix various dental abnormalities.

Archeologists even discovered numerous mummified ancient individuals with the appearance of metal bands wrapped around their teeth. This clearly proves that the concept of orthodontic brackets were not uncommon in ancient age.

With the modern innovation in dental science, one can use either cosmetic braces or structural braces. In some cases, dental braces are used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances in order to help widen the palate or jaws. By using this process, the dentists actually assist the patient to shape the teeth and jaw position.

The process in which braces and brackets work to repair teeth abnormalities is no doubt interesting. The application of braces moves the teeth as a result of force and pressures on the teeth. Generally four basic elements are required in order to help the teeth to move in the correct position. These four elements are: brackets, bonding material, arch wire, and ligature elastic. The teeth of a patient start to move when pressure is put on them by the arch wire. In some cases, spring or rubber bands are used to put extra pressure on the brackets. After a certain period of time, the teeth will move into their specific directions.

The adults often use headgear when they want to keep certain teeth from moving. The process of teeth movement needs to be done slowly as the periodontal membrane stretches on one side. This is why these treatments normally take two and a half years to complete. However, with the modern braces the treatment time may reduce.

Hidden braces are new innovation in the orthodontic dentistry. These braces are generally attached behind the teeth of an individual so that nobody can see this. As a result, the braces are literally invisible in the eyes of others. You can use these aligners without letting others know that you are actually undergoing any dental treatment.

There are so many types of brackets and aligners that the patients may use. Some of the popular items are: clear braces, gold-plated stainless steel braces, lingual braces, titanium braces, incognito, ibraces etc. These are considered as the customized solution for the dental treatment as they can be customized according to the teeth of an individual. In every three to six weeks, the aligners must be adjusted. This helps shift the teeth into their correct position.
