Windows 2000 is the last release of Microsoft operating system that bore the “Windows NT” designation. It is considered to be the most stable system of the Windows NT series. However, sometimes the Windows 2000 system too can get corrupt. Due to this, the Windows system becomes inaccessible. To resolve this situation, you should consider taking appropriate corrective measures. However, if you are unable to address the issue then you should use a hard drive recovery software to perform Windows hard drive recovery.

Consider a scenario wherein you are working on your Windows 2000 system. Suddenly, there is a power surge and the system shuts down abruptly.

“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced”

Kindly note that the “ced” letters are not part of the message and were actually part of the error message in the previous screen. There is also a possibility of getting following erro message:

“System hive error”

There could be various reasons for this error message.

A Promise Technology, Inc. ATA66 PCI controller card is installed in the computer. This particularly happens if you have just installed Windows 2000.

The System hive in the registry is damaged or missing.

To resolve this error message, you should perform either of the following methods:

Remove the Promise Technology ATA66 PCI Controller: Remove the Promise Technology ATA66 PCI controller card, check the BIOS settings to make sure that the IDE controller on your motherboard is enabled, and then run Windows 2000 Setup again.

Restore a Backup of the System Hive: Use the Repair Console tool to replace the backup copy of the System hive from the repair folder.

Reduce the Size of the System Hive: If a large number of resources are shared on the computer, the registry may become too large. So, you should reduce the size of the System Hive.

However, if you are still not able to resolve the issue and access the hard drive then you should use a third-party hard drive recovery tool to recover hard drive. Such read-only tools are able to perform hard drive recovery using fast yet sophisticated scanning algorithms without overwriting the original data.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is a hard drive recovery tool that enables you to recover hard drive from FAT and NTFS file systems. It is able to recover lost, deleted, formatted, or inaccessible data from various storage media such as hard drives, iPods, external hard drives, pen drives, etc. This hard drive recovery software is capable of recovering more than 185 different file types.
