However, you may hesitate to do so because you may think that the process is painful and complicated. You do not have to because Pap smear test is a painless procedure and can be completed within minutes.

What is a Pap Smear Test?

The purpose of this test is to check for cervical cancer. The doctors will collect cells from your cervix and examine whether cancerous cells are present. If they have detected anything abnormal in the cells they have collected, they may require further testing.

Undergoing a regular Pap smear is very important for women since it will allow you to prevent cervical cancer as early as possible. As you already know, cancer is only treatable when it is still at its early stage.

When Should You Undergo Pap Smear Test?

Medical experts recommend that you undergo Pap smear tests starting at the age of 21. According to the older guidelines, doctors advise you to have a Pap smear test three years after you become sexually active. Of course, if you are already over 21, undergoing the test is necessary if you want to avoid suffering from cervical cancer.

How to Prepare for Pap Smear Test

It is advisable that you make an appointment for the Pap smear test when you are not menstruating. You must also avoid having sexual intercourse, using tampons, or douching 48 hours before your appointment. This is to ensure that your doctors will get accurate results from the Pap smear test.

What You Should Expect During the Procedure

During the procedure, the doctor will ask you to undress from the waist down. He or she will provide sheets that you can use to cover your mid section and thighs so that you will not be exposed completely.  After you have undressed, the doctor will ask you to lie on the examination table and place your feet on the stirrups. Since the stirrups are cold, it is advisable that you wear socks.

Once you are lying down on the exam table, the doctor will insert a lubricated speculum into your vagina. Once the doctor gets the samples they need, you can start dressing. The doctor will send the samples to the lab for testing.

If the results are normal, the doctor will notify you about it via email or a phone call. However, if the results are abnormal the doctor set follow-up appointments for further testing.

The Pap smear test is an important step towards the prevention of cervical cancer. You do not have to be afraid that you will feel any pain because the test is a simple procedure and is painless.
