A Windows operating system consists of various DLL (Data Link Library) files, one of them being hal.dll file. The file, saved at C:\Windows\System32 folder, is a hardware abstraction layer file that prevents the installed applications to directly access the CPU (Central Processing Unit), system's memory, and hardware devices. An hal.dll file can go missing when the boot.ini file gets corrupted or damaged. This mainly occurs due to improper system shutdown, virus attack, operating system malfunction, or human errors. In such situations, the booting process of Windows operating system halts and the hard drive data becomes inaccessible. In such cases, if a Windows user wants to access the data, then s/he will need to restore the data from an updated backup. However, if no backup is available, then the user needs to use an advanced third-party Data Recovery Software.

For practical explanation of the above case, consider the below error message:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.”

The boot process of the Windows operating system halts when the above error message pops up. This error message appears when the hal.dll file is missing due to corruption in boot.ini file. After the above error message appears, the Windows based hard drive data becomes inaccessible.

To resolve the above error message and to access the Windows based hard drive data, you will need to follow the below measures:

  • Try to get to the C:\> prompt by using the Windows boot CD.

  • Use a boot diskette to search a boot.ini file on your system.

If the above measures do not help you to resolve the above error message, then you will need to reinstall Windows operating system. To recover the data after formatting the hard drive, you will need to opt for an advanced data recovery software. These Data Recovery applications recover every kind of file and restore them on our desired location.

Windows Data Recovery is a tool that recoups data from formatted and corrupted hard drives in just three simple steps. The data recovery tools supports recovery of data from FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, VFAT , NTFS and NTFS5 file systems volumes. It supports Windows7, Vista, XP, 2003, and 2000.
