Barcelona is a and progressive capital of Catalonia and a fantastic place to visit. Probably the most prosperous city in the country, it has a ease and cultural dynamism way ahead of the rest of Spain which is so strong you can feel it just walking around.
Everyone's heard of the main attractions in Barcelona, like La Sagrada Familia and the Picasso Museum, but what about some of the cool and different thing to do in the capital of Catalonia...
Montjuic and Tibidabo
Barcelona has a number of famous views. There are its two mountains (Montjuic and Tibidabo), La Sagrada Familia, the Cathedral and many more. But for me, the best views are from the top of the Columbus monument.
Take a Day Trip to Montserrat
Montserrat is a stunning jagged mountain about half an hour outside of Barcelona. There is a famous monastery here and some great hiking trails. Montserrat is a spectacularly beautiful Benedictine monk mountain retreat about one hour North West from Barcelona by train. Not only is Montserrat Monastery of significant religious importance but the natural beauty surrounding the monastery is simply breathtaking.
Party On The Seven Seas
That's right m'hearties, get as drunk as a sailor with 79 other wild young things during the Barcelona Booze Cruise, which sets sail twice a week during the warmer months and features BBQ, DJs, games and a shipload of beer, cocktails and sangria.
The most popular reason to be in El Born is to visit the Picasso museum, but there is much more to see than just that. The narrow streets are as interesting as those of Barri Gotic and there are some excellent wine bars around the Basilica de Santa Maria.
When in Granada, Eat Tapas
Barcelona has great food, there is no doubt about it. You can get anything you want from international food to Catalan favourites, tapas to seafood platters. All you have to do is look around, there are lots of very logically priced.
Everyone's amazed to discover that in Granada, you can eat for free! That's right, with every small drink you buy in a bar in Granada, you'll get something to eat. And we're not talking just a few olives here (though that is occasionally all you get). We're talking generous portions of paella or even a burger and fries! You can easily get your fill after just three or four small beers.
Barcelona is a party city, whatever time of the night or morning there is always something going on. There are bars to suit everyone, weird ones, secret ones, Catalan ones, Irish pubs, ones with great views and ones with a trendy clientele.
