Susan was extremely excited to rejuvenate her smile by undergoing dental veneers treatment. One of her friends recently had brand new veneers placed, and she was dazzled by the results. When Susan visited Dr. Scharfenberg and team with the Elmhurst Dentist, she was concerned about what would be done to her natural teeth in order for the veneers to fit comfortably.
Our team explained the preparation process for dental veneers to her in great detail. Today we will go over what we shared with Susan, so that patients may gain an understanding of what exactly happens during the first stages of dental veneers treatment.
Dental veneers are made of thin layers of porcelain that are placed on the natural teeth. Since these porcelain shells are affixed to the outside surfaces of the teeth, they must be shaved a little bit in order to make a dental veneer fit comfortably on each tooth while not appearing bulky.
First a local anesthesia is administered which effectively keeps the patient comfortable during treatment. Our Dentist gently shaves away some of the surface area of the teeth. In most cases, approximately ½ of a millimeter of dental matter is removed from each tooth.
An impression of the newly shaved teeth is made, and the patient’s brand new dental veneers are carefully crafted in a dental laboratory. In one to two weeks, our team will place the permanent veneer which was crafted from a mold of the smile. In the end, dental veneers will fit seamlessly in the mouth!
When Susan completely understood the treatment process, she was ready to pursue dental veneers treatment. In just three short appointments, Susan had a dream smile, and has been happy and confident ever since! Dental veneers are able to correct one tooth, or an entire smile.
